I had to talk about it as it is the newest device in my life and I have a love/hate relationship with it.
Why I love it: Portability, my library is with me always, in a neat little package! No trees are killed to bring me my stories. The files don’t yellow, tear, break, smell or get dusty. So many authors are publishing electronic only these days. I would miss out BIG TIME if I didn’t have one.
Why I hate it: Unless files are named correctly I don’t know what order to read a series in. I need to remember new author names OR new book names to find things. Basically, I need a computer handy to figure out what to read or I need to take notes every time I download something because I won’t remember. I miss covers and the blurb on the back. I think my TBR has grown exponentially with the kindle and I have no hope of catching up. That is fun and stressful at the same time. It froze on me one time and I finally figured out how to reboot. I would/will freak out when it dies on me (reminder to self, back up books!). Lending…much tougher.
Overall, the good outweights that bad. I have some of the same problem with my music collection (I really miss the liner notes). Some day soon I will miss my packaged DVDs. It is the way of the future after all.
How about you? After you balance both, do you love or dislike e-readers?
I just got a Kindle in March for my birthday, so I’m still getting used to it. I hear you about the negatives though, it can be a bit frustrating searching for stuff and remembering what I downloaded. It should tag the book with something like ‘Already in your library’ or something!
You have to admit, all the free books are pretty cool though 😉
have fun with it and don’t stress too much about the TBR :p
I think I stress when my reading slows down (right now!! I haven’t finished a book to review it since the A-Z challenge started). That is just the way I am built I guess. When I get into a long, tough read I start getting worked up about my backlog. Lame I know!! It ebbs and flows. 🙂
I agree with all you say. I also sit with my laptop set on Amazon and Goodreads while I shop with my Kindle. Also, not all publishers are putting new releases on Kindle. So one still has to buy paper if you want to read a book as soon aas it comes out. Love the portability though. Big chnage in my life, going digital
It is a huge change!! (as Garth Algar says in Wayne’s World, “we fear change” so I have to moan and groan a little as my brain figures out how to adjust.) Goodreads has recently changed my life too though! Not all are tough adjustments. lol 🙂
I couldn’t live without my Kindle 🙂 I have the Kindle Fire and before had the Kindle 3 with keyboard. On the older Kindles you could check the description of a book, which was great. You could also categorize them. Still, I absolutely adore my Kindle Fire.
I have been categorizing…and it is getting better. I am just being a pain and will fall into line before too long. I do love the instant gratification aspect! 🙂
I have to admit that I am anti kindle, I just don’t like them, I think I will be paperback books forever, that is unless they stop making them. However I don’t have a problem with other people using them, I just don’t want to use them myself.
I started out that way, but found I was missing out on too many things! I understand though. I love my paper books!!
I love my kindle! I hadn’t really thought about those negatives, but you’re right – finding out what a book is about is kind of a pain.
I actually still need to get an e-reader before I decide. And I still need to catch up on my TBR list before the investment is worthwhile.
Talk about a vicious circle.
As my dad would say “you are doomed” 🙂 I got one as a gift…no worrying about TBR lists etc – now it is just part of it all.
I love my kindle! I’ve had it for a couple years now and I really love it
Sonia Lal, A to Z challenge
Wow, you got it early on, that is great! I have only had mine a couple of months…I think that is why I am still a bit wishy washy
Maybe.
Also, I rename all files with Calibre. I put the books on Calibre after I get them, than send
them back to the Kindle.
Even when you get books directly from amazon, they are named however the publisher names them. I want the series name, book numer in the series, and I like a period after initals. Like J. D. Robb instead of JD Robb. I don’t want just Witness in Death, I want In Death 03: Witness In Death.
It’s double work but worth it because it makes finding books so much easier. Plus, I put them in catarogires according to genre. Romance, fantast, YA, Science Fiction, Non Fiction, Classics . . .
That is super smart! I may have to do that because I want the same thing!! That would make it so much easier to find things.
I got a kindle for christmas and i really love it, but i still love my real books too. I tend to use my kindle for free books, or books that i want to read that are cheap, and my real books for series reading or other books that i might want to share with others 🙂
I just got a Kindle Fire. Before, I was using the app to read on my phone. I have to admit I was on the fence but now I love it. Even though I will never get tired of reading physical books, I really like that it does so much and the graphics are really gorgeous.
You bring to mind a great point…maybe as writers there are ways to write for the kindle reader. I’ve been considering writing a kindle book, now I will consider how to write it so it is kindle reader friendly.
I love kindle and being able to read at book at anytime on my iPad or iPhone, one or both are always with me.
Hi there, I know what you mean about not being able to find the books. I have to remember the title if I want to find the book ever again. Yup, my reading list has definitely grown longer.
