This could be a stand-alone but it was pretty fun to already know the characters that pop up into this sometimes funny, though in a way scary book by Eric Garrison. The book itself isn’t frightening except in concept, and the fact that these people felt real, so the ideas Garrison slings out there make you think.
While hunting the chupacabra Brett and Liz find something altogether different – and take it home with them. And while at times you might wonder a little bit about their actions, ultimately you can relate.
So old friends, old flames, wanna-be vampires, paranormal societies and non-believers are running through this book. A lot of goofiness, a couple of beer swilling sessions with guys being guys, a little trickery and deception and another road trip in Soccer Mom, their van.
What I like about these books are that I cannot predict where Garrison is going to take things. It really is a rollercoaster ride for these poor shlubs who have to fight and figure out how to fix a pretty dang big problem. Which makes it a fun ride for the reader as well. Also, he has some fun art mixed through the book. I don’t know about you, but I do enjoy getting a picture once in a while! If you like to mix up your paranormal reads, and read about normal people dealing with strange things that go bump in the night, check these books out. These guys have money problems, are kind of nerdy, hang out online a lot and go to paranormal conventions. So they do have some resources in their friends and acquaintances, but that is all the edge they get to deal with everything. Since we are following Brett around, it has a little more of a “guys feel” to it too. 3.5 raw stars made of raw hamburger, we are using them to catch a chupacabra since the road kill didn’t work.
